Transformation Requires Surrender

FOOD - be the bossPeople love to learn what they can do to improve their life. They hunger for tips that are easy to apply, like read this devotional, attend this service, do this workout, take this supplement – but BOY do they NOT like to hear what they shouldn’t do, what they need to give up, what they need to CHANGE.

Most people are willing to work a little harder to get something, but most people are not willing to surrender. Surrender requires giving up something you like. Christianity requires giving up doing whatever you want. Fitness requires giving up eating whatever you want. The gain is worth it, but so many people resist surrender, holding on to what is really making them miserable to begin with.

That’s where the bondage comes in. We hold on to it, and it holds on to us – paralyzing us, and preventing us to be…

Fed-Up Challenge

9 May

I just heard about a really interesting challenge called the Fed-Up Challenge by Katie Couric.  Basically,  for ten days you cut out ALL artifical/added sugars and sweetners(honey and mollasses included) .  I’m going to give it a try because I want to see if there really is a big difference in my energy levels, my skin complexion, and my overall well being.

As some of you know, I come from a family of sweets eaters.  The Hancock side of my family is known for all of our decadent desserts like strawberry cheesecake, pound cake, red velvet cake, sweet potato pie…..you see where I’m going with this?  I have no doubt these dishes have a lot of sugar in them because I have made them myself.  However,  I try to make those dishes for special occassions like birthdays and holidays.  I have to be honest, I’m not sure how well I am going to do with this challenge because I can be a big snacker. My biggest addiction is chocolate.  Oreos, chocolate cake, brownies….anything like that will have me slip up everytime.  I am hoping that after this challenge is over.  I will be able to report back the progress I made cutting out all those extra hidden sugars.  You are all welcome to join me on this journey to wellness and self-improvement.

Here’s to having a happy, healthy fed-up challenge!

It’s All About Priorities…..

8 May

When you have goals in life, certain things become a priority. It seems like the first thing to take a back seat is your health.  I think its safe to say that not very many people actually enjoy working out or exercise.  Because of that it’s so easy to give it up when things change. Take me for example, I’m working, preparing for graduate school, looking for an apartment etc.  With all that going on it’s easy to push my workout back to “tomorrow” and before I know it, I’ve missed two weeks at the gym.

Negelct your health now and you will certainly pay for it later.  I suggest making a list of the things that are most important to you.  Is it religion, family, education, your health?  Prioritize this list.

I know it’s cliche but I’ve picked up a habit that one of my godmamas lives by-write it down. In the Bible there is a verse that says “write the vision and make it plain”(Habakkuk 2:2). In other words, write down what your goals, priorites, aspirations, dreams are so you can have a clearer understanding or vision. You can do this can be for fittness, careers, dream homes, family, spiritually, or finances; anything you would like.

I am in the process of creating a vision board so that I can have in plain sight my goals for the next 5 years. I will definitely share pictures once it’s finished and keep you guys updated on that. Of course fitness is going to be included but that’s just a small piece of the puzzle. There are times where it’s really challenging to stay on track with my fitness, education, and/or career goals but the best part is, everyday is an opportunity to try again.

Here’s to getting back on track!
