WHERE HAVE I BEEN???? Back in the swing of things!

18 Mar

Okay….okay….so I have to apologize for my extremely horrible blogging pattern.  I have a pretty good excuse I think….I was getting ready for one of the most important days of my life….GRADUATION!!! I am proud to say I am officially an alumnus of the University of Florida and I will forever bleed orange and blue!

Now back to this blogging business, so the issue is now I am living an in area where major companies like Comcast and AT&T  do not provide wireless internet….I’d have to get dial up.  So the only access I have to the internet world is the public library or my cell phone and blogging from a cell phone ain’t gona cut it.   NO

In regards to all things fitness, it is safe to say I fell off big time.  Two days after graduation I moved back to my hometown in Arkansas and a few weeks later I started working.  I did go to the gym consistently initially but awful winter weather kept me locked in the house with plenty of good ole country cooking.  Needless to say, I quickly got out of the swing of things and I noticed my body changing almost immediately.  The tight abs and toned arms were getting softer.  Every day I’d say “tomorrow I’ll go” or “it’s too cold”.   All I had was a bunch of excuses.     Then at the end of February, I lost my Papa LC and I turned to food for comfort.   Sweets and fast food became my best friend( I’m pretty sure I was having some serious emotional eating going on).  It is a daily struggle but I am slowly coming out of it.

Today will be my first day in almost six weeks back in the gym so of course I’m going to hate myself with every rep and every step I take during this run tonight.

It’s going to be challenging these next few weeks but I had to remind myself why I wanted to be healthy in the first place!  At the end of the day the core issue is making time for what’s important….even if that means sacrificing an hour of sleep to get in a workout.  Not only that, I’ve got to get back in the habit of cooking everyday and buying more fruits and veggies to have on hand to snack on.   THANK GOD I didn’t put on any weight but I’m certainly not as toned or in shape as I was but hey, I’ve got a good eight weeks before summer starts.  Let’s get it!  Back on track and loving every minute of it.  Y’all won’t be ready for this summer body!!!! I’m getting fit and staying that way!

It Has Been a Minute/Checking In

13 Aug

Alright, alright, don’t stone me…..I know it has been quite a long time since I have posted but I believe my excuse is legitimate.  See I started my summer semester of college and I was taking a total of three classes.  Of those three classes,  microeconomics was one of them…..let me take this moment to say that microeconomics is a Godforsaken class and I will never miss that class.

Anyway, I don’t really remember the last thing I posted and I didn’t take the time to look at what I wrote, I’ve just decided to try to pick up like nothing happened *cough cough*.   Well let’s see, I guess I can give you an update about what I’ve been doing about working out and eating healthy…..all that great stuff.

To start, I haven’t been doing the best when it comes to eating right or exercising.  Don’t get me wrong, I have certainly been, doing better than I was previously but I haven’t been doing as well as I would like to.  Two of the biggest issues is 1.) easy access to a workout facility and 2.) money.

Alright so my dad is retired military and I can use the gym on the military base but it is a world away and “ain’t nobody got gas for that”.  Having neighborhood runs is out of the question. Why? Because my dad is afraid that someone will snatch me up…..but trust me they will bring me back with a quickness.

The number two reason, money, is what happens when you’re a minimum wage earning college student.  So I don’t have the money for gas or healthy food.  Grant it, I would make investments in fruit and veggies when I had the extra funds but it’s a little bit harder to keep that kind of food around the house with my parents.  To be honest my parents are not the healthiest eaters but when I buy my healthy food all of a sudden they go on this health kick.  Keep in mind, my food is not cheap.  I buy my groceries from Publix and Whole Foods because I want to treat my body right(expensive taste for a college student I know).  Hey, I mean I want to be healthy and have a good quality of life so a girls gota do what a girls gota do.

Anyway, those two factors are the biggest issues that I have had during the summer and it has set me back a little bit.  I’m not back at square one per se but I am not as close to my dream beach body that I want.  So once I move back on Sunday I can get back into the swing of things and really get my sexy on.  Here’s to my last semester of college and my ongoing quest to being a healthier me!!

Women, Weight, and Body Image

9 May

Alright….so this post is aaaallll about women. Now just to clear the air, I am not about to rant about how hard it is for women to lose weight or how unfair it is that men can lose weight faster blah blah blah. In fact, I could care less about any of that. What I do want to focus on is the way we as women treat each other.

In a previous post I mentioned the different type of people you have at th gym. Well in this one we’re going to focus on the different types of women…..you’ve got the show off( wears only sports bra and too tight spandex shorts), insecure woman( she is so worried about what others think of her body she doesn’t even like going to the gym) normal/nonchalant (just in the gym with her music blasting trying to get her work out in before she gets the day going, super health conscious), and the beast( working out is her life, she’s probably trying to be a body builder), and you can’t forget the “know nothing” woman. And when I say that I don’t mean to question anyone’s level of intelligence, I mean she’s the type of woman to take up tons of time trying to figure out how to use a piece of equipment instead of just asking before hand like come on miss please just move already! Anyway that’s just a quick description of some of the type if women in the gym.

Ok, to the meat of the matter. I’ve actually been working on this piece for a minute because I really wanted to make sure I got my point across. I’ve really noticed (even more) since going away to school that we as women tear each other down like it’s nobodies business. (pause for the gasps on disbelief) yes we as women tend to pull each other down just so we can get ahead. So to focus on women in the gym since this is a blog about fitness, I can’t seem to grasp why it is we have faces that look like we’ve been sucking on lemons. For example, you see the “show off” walk in and you’re immediately turned off. Don’t get me wrong I can understand the envy you may feel because she comes into the gym everyday without ever hardly breaking a sweat and still has a body that looks like it was carved by angels…..well guess what SUCK IT IP! Yeah, I said it! We aren’t all built the same so if you know you have to “sweat like a pig to look like a fox” do what you have to do, being mad at her or discussing her with your workout partner is not going to change the fact that you still have to leave it all in the gym to get the results you want.

I’m going leave the woman thing along because I think y’all get my point but one other thing I’d like to address about the example I have previously…..you should consider what you are eating. The “show off” may only do light workouts everyday but her eating habits are probably cleaner than a hospital room so just because she’s not making the “sacrifices” you think are necessary in the gym, you have no idea what she does at home and that’s her business.
Well enough about that I don’t care to say too much more about this cause I’ll get aggravated but let me know what y’all think and as always….

Having a Healthier diet Part 2( Sugar and you!)

3 May

Ok so I want to start off by saying this from the jump my next post will be about body image, weight and women because we as women can be soooooo ugly to one another. Anyway that will come up another time, right now I want to focus on the consumption of sugar and how it affects our weight/health.

Ok so if you have a sweet tooth and you know it raise your hand *clap clap*, if you have a sweet tooth and you know it raise your hand *clap clap*. Ok so I have both hands and feet raised at this point because I have an extremely bad case of having a sweet tooth or sweet mouth sweet teeth whatever you want to call it. Anyway, I know someone out there may be asking, “what’s so bad about sugar?” Or something along those lines right. Well here’s the thing there isn’t anything wrong with sugar. It’s great for making yummy desserts and treats but the problem comes when we use 4cups of sugar in one of our yummy desserts and then we try to eat said yummy dessert by ourselves.

For example, if you make a chocolate cake today and you are the only person in the house that cake should not be finished in two days. In fact, if you finish the cake before it goes bad you should reevaluate some things. The only reason I’m saying this is because chances are, that cake isn’t the only sugary thing you’ve had today….think about it…that iced white chocolate mocha coffee with the danish this morning for breakfast, the cereal bar for lunch with a lipton iced tea cause you’re “watching your weight” then your afternoon snack is a slice of chocolate cake that covers half of the plate…..yes you are certainly watching your weight……watching it grow exponentially. So although it may see that one slice of cake you have a day is harmless, keep in mind how much sugar is in all the other food you are eating and the drinks you have.

Keep in mind, there are different names for sugar. Some names are sucrose, fructose, dextrose, maltose, high fructose corn syrup, just to name a few! There are lots of different types of sugar so do your research!

Well, that’s all for now love bugs!

Having a healthier diet(Part 1): Fiber

20 Apr

Alrighty so, I’ve been doing some research about weight loss and all that good stuff because like most people I want to have a super sexy toned core. The problem is, I love to eat. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it I LOVE TO EAT! I come from a family of fabulous cooks….and when I say fabulous I mean NONE CAN COMPARE TO HOW WONDERFULLY EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN MY FAMILY CAN PREPARE DELICIOUS MEALS THAT ARE EXTREMELY UNHEALTHY FOR YOU!….Sorry for shouting….ehem anyway, my grandmother makes pound cakes like nobodies business and anything else she makes is heavenly. From that wonderful turkey dressing, mac and cheese, greens, sweet potato pies for Thanksgiving to the white rice, bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, and biscuits for breakfast.

OK……enough of all that my mouth is starting to water. But seriously, I really want to get a really tight core and if you haven’t heard it said before, abs are made in the kitchen but sometimes you just want to fill up on the fried greasy american foods we all know and love. So whats the best way to eat better? Or at least feel full longer so you won’t eat too much of that greasy garbage we call food? Well there is this great thing called FIBER!Image

That’s right ladies and gentleman fiber will help you feel full longer without concern for gaining unnecessary weight. What’s even better is, according to the internet, fiber is a great way to lose weight because of that fabulous way eat keeps you feeling full longer. Some other benefits of fiber is to help you stay regular…..aka have easier bowel movements. Let’s be mature about this y’all. We all do it and some of y’all probably really struggle….pause…..with that in mind fiber and lots of water will be helpful for all of that irregularity.

Now here is my moment of honesty, I absolutely suck at eating healthy. I mean don’t get me wrong I am much better than I used to be. I eat more fruits and veggies and I’ve cut back substantially in the fried food department. However, I do not get enough rest( the life of a college student) and sometimes my idea of a meal is a muffin and slice of turkey all day resulting in ravenous hunger once I finally get home for dinner….resulting in a spread of anything I can dig my claws into. So that’s where I am in life trying to figure out how to eat better on the go. I’ve recently discovered this great thing called meal prep that I plan to put in full swing this summer. Enough about that though, I’ll write about that another time. Now back to the fiber.

The type of fiber I have been referring to in this post is dietary fiber which is found mostly in fruits and veggies. I have never used any of the marketed fiber supplements but hey whatever floats your boat right? Here are some foods that are pretty common that are high in fiber: pears, strawberries, oranges, broccoli, carrots, greens etc. If you want more foods you can just google high fiber foods for a list of different fruits and veggies to try. Next post will focus on consumption of too much sugar. Want to start losing belly fat cut out all the sugary drinks and processed fruit juices. Fresh squeezed is the way to go(you can also use a juicer if you’re into that kind of thing) and the best part about fresh squeezed fruit juices is the increased fiber! Yay fiber!

Living a Full and Healthy Life

16 Apr

This is gona be pretty short post tonight, I’m taking a break from the project that I have due for my management class this Thursday(God help me). So I was thinking about health of course. The thing I was thinking about specifically was why we even workout or eat healthy. I mean I’m not sure about anyone else but some days I just want to throw it all down the drain and have an extremely pessimistic attitude and say “hey, I’m going to die anyway let me enjoy myself while I’m doing it.” Then I started thinking how absolutely asinine that would be if I did decide to do something like that. The reason I say that is because I would be paying through the nose when I got older to try to stay alive. In other words, all the unhealthy choices I make now at a young age I WILL PAY FOR IT IN THE FUTURE! So what does that have to do with living a full and healthy life or people working out etc? Well, some people workout because they want to “live longer”. Honey let me put your mind at ease right now.

Meaning, whatever time you are destined to have that is just how much time you have. Yes I know you’re probably rolling your eyes or scratching your head but guess what every one is leaving here ready or not. What’s even worse is the fact that you can actually decrease the quantity of your life. In other words, bad eating habits, excessive drinking and smoking can all contribute to your life being cut short. Now I know that sounds extremely morbid but hear me out. On the flip side, although you may not be able to increase the quantity…you always have the chance to INCREASE AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY! yes_logo What I mean by that is, you can work out, eat right, get enough rest, drink lots of water and give yourself the chance to live a full life.

So in essence you have two choices. You can eat trash, sit on your butt all day every day, wear your body out by doing self destructive things like drinking and smoking…..ooorrrr you can go ahead and build a better, stronger, healthier you. When you do this, you help your pocket smile because you aren’t constantly throwing hundred or even thousands of dollars into hospitals or doctors laps because you neglected to do the basic things to take care of and maintain your health. Trust me, this is literally going to be a life long journey but it can be done and you won’t regret it if you just give it a try.

What’s with these guys?

11 Apr

Alright so it’s safe to say that you all know I’m a gym junkie, specifically the weight room.  Unlike most women, I work lower and upper body because I’d prefer not having chicken wings for arms and massive steroidal looking legs.  You know what I noticed though, guys and girls alike don’t work out very proportionally.  For example if my week starts with leg day then I’m going to rotate to upper body the next day and then back to leg day and so forth.  What I don’t seem to get is how folk, guys in particular, will dedicate there every waking moment in the gym to upper body. Case in pointImage

This guy walks in with this massive upper body and the legs of a thirteen year old.  Grant it his upper body is fabulous but will his chicken legs be able to hold all that up for much longer?  What’s even more frustrating, as I mentioned yesterday, is how these guys seem to hog all of the equipment.  I mean seriously bruh?  I’m just trying to get my swole on like the rest of y’all. For some reason, I can’t seem to ever get to the bench or the free weights without fear of being trampled by an army of  big chested but wobbly legged guys trying to strut his stuff.  Don’t get me wrong we all have our vices.  Mine is the absolute detest of cardio. If I could avoid it I would but we all know weight training with know cardio means muscle being built under fat and that is UNattractive.

Seriously, come on guys, lets be proportionate.  Besides, you need to give your arms a break.  Did you know that you get small micro tears in your muscles when you lift? Yep! Its because of the extra stress you’re putting on your muscles lifting the heavy weights.   Because of that reason it’s best for you to rotate workouts because to much tearing can lead to serious injury( especially if you go ham every time) which will push you further away from your goal of being Mr. or Miss Swole.  How can you say that Kyra? After years of basketball and track and field in high school I’ve learned a thing or two from experience.  So guys take a break, step away from the free weights and do some leg presses or wall sits for a change.  It might surprise you but women find nice (guy) butts attractive too. 😉
