My Last Day- No More Fast Food

1 Apr

Please take a moment with me to say goodbye to the worst relationship I have ever had and that is with fast food restaurants like Popeyes, McDonalds, Wendy’s, Five Guys, Taco Bell…..just to name a few.  We had a great run but you’ve been nothing but trouble for me.  Your addictive over-processed and harldy nutritional food has been such a major obstacle for me!  I can be the biggest gym junkie in the world (literally and figuratively)  but still see no real results because of your unfortunately deceptive easiness.

So here is my goodbye to you all.  Trust me, this is as hard for me as it is for you but I’ve gota let you go! You’re holding me back from the body I really want.  Some of you we can’t talk ever again…..some of you…..we’ll just be occasional acquaintances(like Chik-fil-a for those blessed milk shakes. Good thing is the closest one is an hour away so I won’t be having many of those either).  My kitchen has become my new best friend and I won’t leave you again. Sorry it took so long for me to come back to you…..and no this isn’t an April Fools joke.

WHERE HAVE I BEEN???? Back in the swing of things!

18 Mar

Okay….okay….so I have to apologize for my extremely horrible blogging pattern.  I have a pretty good excuse I think….I was getting ready for one of the most important days of my life….GRADUATION!!! I am proud to say I am officially an alumnus of the University of Florida and I will forever bleed orange and blue!

Now back to this blogging business, so the issue is now I am living an in area where major companies like Comcast and AT&T  do not provide wireless internet….I’d have to get dial up.  So the only access I have to the internet world is the public library or my cell phone and blogging from a cell phone ain’t gona cut it.   NO

In regards to all things fitness, it is safe to say I fell off big time.  Two days after graduation I moved back to my hometown in Arkansas and a few weeks later I started working.  I did go to the gym consistently initially but awful winter weather kept me locked in the house with plenty of good ole country cooking.  Needless to say, I quickly got out of the swing of things and I noticed my body changing almost immediately.  The tight abs and toned arms were getting softer.  Every day I’d say “tomorrow I’ll go” or “it’s too cold”.   All I had was a bunch of excuses.     Then at the end of February, I lost my Papa LC and I turned to food for comfort.   Sweets and fast food became my best friend( I’m pretty sure I was having some serious emotional eating going on).  It is a daily struggle but I am slowly coming out of it.

Today will be my first day in almost six weeks back in the gym so of course I’m going to hate myself with every rep and every step I take during this run tonight.

It’s going to be challenging these next few weeks but I had to remind myself why I wanted to be healthy in the first place!  At the end of the day the core issue is making time for what’s important….even if that means sacrificing an hour of sleep to get in a workout.  Not only that, I’ve got to get back in the habit of cooking everyday and buying more fruits and veggies to have on hand to snack on.   THANK GOD I didn’t put on any weight but I’m certainly not as toned or in shape as I was but hey, I’ve got a good eight weeks before summer starts.  Let’s get it!  Back on track and loving every minute of it.  Y’all won’t be ready for this summer body!!!! I’m getting fit and staying that way!

Women, Weight, and Body Image

9 May

Alright….so this post is aaaallll about women. Now just to clear the air, I am not about to rant about how hard it is for women to lose weight or how unfair it is that men can lose weight faster blah blah blah. In fact, I could care less about any of that. What I do want to focus on is the way we as women treat each other.

In a previous post I mentioned the different type of people you have at th gym. Well in this one we’re going to focus on the different types of women…..you’ve got the show off( wears only sports bra and too tight spandex shorts), insecure woman( she is so worried about what others think of her body she doesn’t even like going to the gym) normal/nonchalant (just in the gym with her music blasting trying to get her work out in before she gets the day going, super health conscious), and the beast( working out is her life, she’s probably trying to be a body builder), and you can’t forget the “know nothing” woman. And when I say that I don’t mean to question anyone’s level of intelligence, I mean she’s the type of woman to take up tons of time trying to figure out how to use a piece of equipment instead of just asking before hand like come on miss please just move already! Anyway that’s just a quick description of some of the type if women in the gym.

Ok, to the meat of the matter. I’ve actually been working on this piece for a minute because I really wanted to make sure I got my point across. I’ve really noticed (even more) since going away to school that we as women tear each other down like it’s nobodies business. (pause for the gasps on disbelief) yes we as women tend to pull each other down just so we can get ahead. So to focus on women in the gym since this is a blog about fitness, I can’t seem to grasp why it is we have faces that look like we’ve been sucking on lemons. For example, you see the “show off” walk in and you’re immediately turned off. Don’t get me wrong I can understand the envy you may feel because she comes into the gym everyday without ever hardly breaking a sweat and still has a body that looks like it was carved by angels…..well guess what SUCK IT IP! Yeah, I said it! We aren’t all built the same so if you know you have to “sweat like a pig to look like a fox” do what you have to do, being mad at her or discussing her with your workout partner is not going to change the fact that you still have to leave it all in the gym to get the results you want.

I’m going leave the woman thing along because I think y’all get my point but one other thing I’d like to address about the example I have previously…..you should consider what you are eating. The “show off” may only do light workouts everyday but her eating habits are probably cleaner than a hospital room so just because she’s not making the “sacrifices” you think are necessary in the gym, you have no idea what she does at home and that’s her business.
Well enough about that I don’t care to say too much more about this cause I’ll get aggravated but let me know what y’all think and as always….

Time Management: Finals and the Gym

18 Apr

Alright so I’m a Senior at the University of Florida and the next few weeks consist of final exams, projects, and papers. Because of that, so far I have missed two days for the gym….and you know what….it is soooo aggravating! I just want to be able to get a good hour work out in without my mind wandering to the assignments and exams that I have to do. I would love for the next few weeks to move quickly but I know they will be painfully slow so what is a girl to do about the possibility of missing more days for working out while trying to prepare for my exams?

Right now, all I want to do is scream my head off….I can’t seem to get any early morning workouts in because I spend late evenings trying to review for exams etc…..then normally I am sleeping during the day(after my classes) to try to make up for the sleep I miss in the evenings due to studying. You see the cycle? I really want to balance out the time but when I’m studying I feel like I need to get through as much material everyday that I can. Not because I’m behind but because the oh so wonderful University of Florida seems to love the idea of cumulative exams and 40page projects and 10 page papers. Not only that UF loooovees to schedule your final exams back to back so you literally are driving yourself to your wits end while you are trying to maintain a semblance of a life.

I just want to workout….is that so much to ask? I guess the best thing I can do right now is eat healthy for the next few weeks and try to do squats and lunges and stretching and all that til I can get back into someone’s weight room. Well I guess this post is really just a rant.

One of my biggest challenges: Pull-ups and Dips

13 Apr

Alright so, I love the gym.  I love lifting, squatting, curling….all that jazz.  Lately I have been trying out a new approach to my workouts doing longer and more intense sets with a lighter weight so I can really develop some definition in my arms, core, back, and legs.  So for a minute I considered doing cross fit but then I realized I’m not about that life.  Don’t get me wrong I love a challenge and I know cross fit would make me look like a Nubian Queen but I also know I need to be able to walk across campus without feeling like my legs are jello.  With that in mind, I think I’ll stick to the more traditional approach to working out.

Most recently I have started the venture of pull-ups and dips.  Now I already do push ups, curls, pull downs, side lats, front lats, dumbbell press etc.  Yes, I do all of that wonderful stuff without making too much of a fool of myself with all of my animal sounding shrieks when I reach the most intense part of the work out.  For some reason though, pull ups and dips are some of the MOST CHALLENGING things I’ve ever done.  It’s something about lifting my own body weight that makes me feel like there is NO WAY I’m doing this.

Fortunately my mama did not raise me to be a quitter, and with that in mind I recently attempted(once again) pull ups and dips and this time my results were quite different…..how is this you may ask?  I discovered this wonderful thing called ASSISTED pull ups and dips. Instead of struggling to lift my own weight the very first try, I was able to get an extra little boost and cranked out a solid 15 pull-ups and a solid 15 dips. I’ll be honest it was 3 sets of 5 but hey it’s a start.  Hopefully soon my assist weight will be down and my pull-up and dips count will be up or at least 3 sets of 10…whichever comes first.

Ladies, I know some of y’all may be afraid that doing those types of workouts will make you “bulk up” but trust me you will have some lovely definition and your clothes will fit FABULOUSLY! So don’t let the fear of getting toned aka building muscle keep you from trying out different workouts, you’d be surprised at how well you do.  Not too mention, muscle burns more calories than fat(look it up).One last piece of advice….If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you! Don’t let something that seems difficult prevent you from reaching your physical goals whether its losing 50 pounds or toning that core.  Whatever it is you want to do you can do it.  All it takes is some hard work and consistency!  Comment and tell me some things that you’ve struggled with while working out.  I’d love to hear from y’all!
