My Last Day- No More Fast Food

1 Apr

Please take a moment with me to say goodbye to the worst relationship I have ever had and that is with fast food restaurants like Popeyes, McDonalds, Wendy’s, Five Guys, Taco Bell…..just to name a few.  We had a great run but you’ve been nothing but trouble for me.  Your addictive over-processed and harldy nutritional food has been such a major obstacle for me!  I can be the biggest gym junkie in the world (literally and figuratively)  but still see no real results because of your unfortunately deceptive easiness.

So here is my goodbye to you all.  Trust me, this is as hard for me as it is for you but I’ve gota let you go! You’re holding me back from the body I really want.  Some of you we can’t talk ever again…..some of you…..we’ll just be occasional acquaintances(like Chik-fil-a for those blessed milk shakes. Good thing is the closest one is an hour away so I won’t be having many of those either).  My kitchen has become my new best friend and I won’t leave you again. Sorry it took so long for me to come back to you…..and no this isn’t an April Fools joke.

Embrace the Body You’ve Been Given

20 Mar

Alright, so I notice alot of people in the fitness world have that one person they look up to whether it’s  friend, co-worker, relative or Shaun from Insanity….everyone’s got someone they admire or aspire to be like.  I was thinking about it and made me think….that can be unhealthy. I know you’re thinking, “Kyra, there is nothing wrong with looking up to someone or wanting to improve”  and I would say you are absolutely correct.  I would also say that some of the people we aspire to look like can sometimes be unrealistic. For example you have the Victoria’s Secret models who have been touched by the god’s…well maybe I won’t go that far…but they are genetically predisposed to have a lean figure. For the guys you’ve got the Hollister and A&F male models who seem to have been carved by angels and everything in between.

Of course I know the groups of people I just mentioned are not everyone’s ideal body goal/type/aspiration.  Some women may prefer to be on the more curvy side like Jennifer Lopez or Beyonce.  The fellas may be more interested in looking like Shaun from insanity…maybe, I don’t really know. I can’t speak for the guys.  Maybe they want to have football players build….or a  basketball player.  Those are the body types I find extremely attractive but I digress.

So to get back on track, everyone has this idea of what they want to look like and sometimes we have a goal in mind and lose sight of who we are.

The purpose for exercising and being healthy has gone from ” I want to be healthy.” to “I want to look like: x, y, and z.” It’s great to have healthy goals to aspire to but be careful because you can end up compromising your house.  If you get so caught up with this “ideal look”, you can develop eating disorders like bulimia or anorexia nervosa.  Or, you can get caught up in the plastic surgery craze.  So many people have ruined their bodies and lives trying to reach these unattainable physiques.  Now I’m not saying you can not or should not want to become a better you.  What I am saying is, putting your body through countless surgeries, endless hours in the gym, injections, or supplements that are not FDA approved (and even some that are) can give you results you DON’T want.

It’s great to want to ever improve but no one is perfect. There is always room to grow and improve so don’t beat yourself up because you don’t look like x, y, and z. Embrace the body you were given, flaws and all.

WHERE HAVE I BEEN???? Back in the swing of things!

18 Mar

Okay….okay….so I have to apologize for my extremely horrible blogging pattern.  I have a pretty good excuse I think….I was getting ready for one of the most important days of my life….GRADUATION!!! I am proud to say I am officially an alumnus of the University of Florida and I will forever bleed orange and blue!

Now back to this blogging business, so the issue is now I am living an in area where major companies like Comcast and AT&T  do not provide wireless internet….I’d have to get dial up.  So the only access I have to the internet world is the public library or my cell phone and blogging from a cell phone ain’t gona cut it.   NO

In regards to all things fitness, it is safe to say I fell off big time.  Two days after graduation I moved back to my hometown in Arkansas and a few weeks later I started working.  I did go to the gym consistently initially but awful winter weather kept me locked in the house with plenty of good ole country cooking.  Needless to say, I quickly got out of the swing of things and I noticed my body changing almost immediately.  The tight abs and toned arms were getting softer.  Every day I’d say “tomorrow I’ll go” or “it’s too cold”.   All I had was a bunch of excuses.     Then at the end of February, I lost my Papa LC and I turned to food for comfort.   Sweets and fast food became my best friend( I’m pretty sure I was having some serious emotional eating going on).  It is a daily struggle but I am slowly coming out of it.

Today will be my first day in almost six weeks back in the gym so of course I’m going to hate myself with every rep and every step I take during this run tonight.

It’s going to be challenging these next few weeks but I had to remind myself why I wanted to be healthy in the first place!  At the end of the day the core issue is making time for what’s important….even if that means sacrificing an hour of sleep to get in a workout.  Not only that, I’ve got to get back in the habit of cooking everyday and buying more fruits and veggies to have on hand to snack on.   THANK GOD I didn’t put on any weight but I’m certainly not as toned or in shape as I was but hey, I’ve got a good eight weeks before summer starts.  Let’s get it!  Back on track and loving every minute of it.  Y’all won’t be ready for this summer body!!!! I’m getting fit and staying that way!

Having a Healthier diet Part 2( Sugar and you!)

3 May

Ok so I want to start off by saying this from the jump my next post will be about body image, weight and women because we as women can be soooooo ugly to one another. Anyway that will come up another time, right now I want to focus on the consumption of sugar and how it affects our weight/health.

Ok so if you have a sweet tooth and you know it raise your hand *clap clap*, if you have a sweet tooth and you know it raise your hand *clap clap*. Ok so I have both hands and feet raised at this point because I have an extremely bad case of having a sweet tooth or sweet mouth sweet teeth whatever you want to call it. Anyway, I know someone out there may be asking, “what’s so bad about sugar?” Or something along those lines right. Well here’s the thing there isn’t anything wrong with sugar. It’s great for making yummy desserts and treats but the problem comes when we use 4cups of sugar in one of our yummy desserts and then we try to eat said yummy dessert by ourselves.

Image

For example, if you make a chocolate cake today and you are the only person in the house that cake should not be finished in two days. In fact, if you finish the cake before it goes bad you should reevaluate some things. The only reason I’m saying this is because chances are, that cake isn’t the only sugary thing you’ve had today….think about it…that iced white chocolate mocha coffee with the danish this morning for breakfast, the cereal bar for lunch with a lipton iced tea cause you’re “watching your weight” then your afternoon snack is a slice of chocolate cake that covers half of the plate…..yes you are certainly watching your weight……watching it grow exponentially. So although it may see that one slice of cake you have a day is harmless, keep in mind how much sugar is in all the other food you are eating and the drinks you have.

Keep in mind, there are different names for sugar. Some names are sucrose, fructose, dextrose, maltose, high fructose corn syrup, just to name a few! There are lots of different types of sugar so do your research!

Well, that’s all for now love bugs!

Time Management: Finals and the Gym

18 Apr

Alright so I’m a Senior at the University of Florida and the next few weeks consist of final exams, projects, and papers. Because of that, so far I have missed two days for the gym….and you know what….it is soooo aggravating! I just want to be able to get a good hour work out in without my mind wandering to the assignments and exams that I have to do. I would love for the next few weeks to move quickly but I know they will be painfully slow so what is a girl to do about the possibility of missing more days for working out while trying to prepare for my exams?

Right now, all I want to do is scream my head off….I can’t seem to get any early morning workouts in because I spend late evenings trying to review for exams etc…..then normally I am sleeping during the day(after my classes) to try to make up for the sleep I miss in the evenings due to studying. You see the cycle? I really want to balance out the time but when I’m studying I feel like I need to get through as much material everyday that I can. Not because I’m behind but because the oh so wonderful University of Florida seems to love the idea of cumulative exams and 40page projects and 10 page papers. Not only that UF loooovees to schedule your final exams back to back so you literally are driving yourself to your wits end while you are trying to maintain a semblance of a life.

I just want to workout….is that so much to ask? I guess the best thing I can do right now is eat healthy for the next few weeks and try to do squats and lunges and stretching and all that til I can get back into someone’s weight room. Well I guess this post is really just a rant.

One of my biggest challenges: Pull-ups and Dips

13 Apr

Alright so, I love the gym.  I love lifting, squatting, curling….all that jazz.  Lately I have been trying out a new approach to my workouts doing longer and more intense sets with a lighter weight so I can really develop some definition in my arms, core, back, and legs.  So for a minute I considered doing cross fit but then I realized I’m not about that life.  Don’t get me wrong I love a challenge and I know cross fit would make me look like a Nubian Queen but I also know I need to be able to walk across campus without feeling like my legs are jello.  With that in mind, I think I’ll stick to the more traditional approach to working out.

Most recently I have started the venture of pull-ups and dips.  Now I already do push ups, curls, pull downs, side lats, front lats, dumbbell press etc.  Yes, I do all of that wonderful stuff without making too much of a fool of myself with all of my animal sounding shrieks when I reach the most intense part of the work out.  For some reason though, pull ups and dips are some of the MOST CHALLENGING things I’ve ever done.  It’s something about lifting my own body weight that makes me feel like there is NO WAY I’m doing this.

Fortunately my mama did not raise me to be a quitter, and with that in mind I recently attempted(once again) pull ups and dips and this time my results were quite different…..how is this you may ask?  I discovered this wonderful thing called ASSISTED pull ups and dips. Instead of struggling to lift my own weight the very first try, I was able to get an extra little boost and cranked out a solid 15 pull-ups and a solid 15 dips. I’ll be honest it was 3 sets of 5 but hey it’s a start.  Hopefully soon my assist weight will be down and my pull-up and dips count will be up or at least 3 sets of 10…whichever comes first.

Ladies, I know some of y’all may be afraid that doing those types of workouts will make you “bulk up” but trust me you will have some lovely definition and your clothes will fit FABULOUSLY! So don’t let the fear of getting toned aka building muscle keep you from trying out different workouts, you’d be surprised at how well you do.  Not too mention, muscle burns more calories than fat(look it up).One last piece of advice….If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you! Don’t let something that seems difficult prevent you from reaching your physical goals whether its losing 50 pounds or toning that core.  Whatever it is you want to do you can do it.  All it takes is some hard work and consistency!  Comment and tell me some things that you’ve struggled with while working out.  I’d love to hear from y’all!

What’s with these guys?

11 Apr

Alright so it’s safe to say that you all know I’m a gym junkie, specifically the weight room.  Unlike most women, I work lower and upper body because I’d prefer not having chicken wings for arms and massive steroidal looking legs.  You know what I noticed though, guys and girls alike don’t work out very proportionally.  For example if my week starts with leg day then I’m going to rotate to upper body the next day and then back to leg day and so forth.  What I don’t seem to get is how folk, guys in particular, will dedicate there every waking moment in the gym to upper body. Case in pointImage

This guy walks in with this massive upper body and the legs of a thirteen year old.  Grant it his upper body is fabulous but will his chicken legs be able to hold all that up for much longer?  What’s even more frustrating, as I mentioned yesterday, is how these guys seem to hog all of the equipment.  I mean seriously bruh?  I’m just trying to get my swole on like the rest of y’all. For some reason, I can’t seem to ever get to the bench or the free weights without fear of being trampled by an army of  big chested but wobbly legged guys trying to strut his stuff.  Don’t get me wrong we all have our vices.  Mine is the absolute detest of cardio. If I could avoid it I would but we all know weight training with know cardio means muscle being built under fat and that is UNattractive.

Seriously, come on guys, lets be proportionate.  Besides, you need to give your arms a break.  Did you know that you get small micro tears in your muscles when you lift? Yep! Its because of the extra stress you’re putting on your muscles lifting the heavy weights.   Because of that reason it’s best for you to rotate workouts because to much tearing can lead to serious injury( especially if you go ham every time) which will push you further away from your goal of being Mr. or Miss Swole.  How can you say that Kyra? After years of basketball and track and field in high school I’ve learned a thing or two from experience.  So guys take a break, step away from the free weights and do some leg presses or wall sits for a change.  It might surprise you but women find nice (guy) butts attractive too. 😉
